i don't think settling for a lesser salary after getting GC is a wise thing to do & i hope you as well as most of the people here would not like to do that unless a person has outdated skills & does not want to upgrade or wants to accept whatever he gets without any efforts.

Another Quebec/Ontirio question.
Apart from the French language and referendum threat, are there any other downsides for Montreal? I guess the reason I seem to be fixated is that I think if I am going to make this change I might as well change the life setting to somewhat more European (in terms of architecture and the environment overall) as I am getting tired of American setting some times. So Montreal sounds more European in that sense. I do however, have a wife and kids and not sure if that makes a difference in the choice of destination as oppose to being a single migrant. Any differences in terms of education quality or family friendly policies between Ontario and Quebec?

Quebec is a poorer province than Ontario, but Montreal is fantastic. If you are after a European flair, then this is the spot for you. There are "english areas" (like Beaconsfield) to live in, that I would recommend if you don't speak french.
VS Ontario: Housing is more affordable, wages may (?) be a pinch lower, taxes are higher.
Canadian educational system is different than the US. You don't need to look for a neighbourhood with a good school. However, a good neighbourhood is better for your family.

If anyone of you here in SAP, Oracle apps, JDE...this might be useful. I have APICS CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) books all four volumes in very good condition. I was asked for the AP in India and Germany. The custom officer in India was aware of the AP and immediately completed the process and let me go. In Germany the 1st person ( probability a new hire) did not understand the AP so he asked another custom officer to look at the AP document. The other office looked at the AP and then explained the document to the 1st officer and let me go.
BTW, the trip last month was the 3rd time I traveled to India on AP.

Defence deals , trade , outsourcing and immigration have always been very closely related all these years . The main reason that Obama was in India was to sell American wares and the No 1 list of his agenda was the $10.1 Billion MMRCA deal apart from future contracts on India's Nuclear Power generation program.
India on the other hand too has always lobbied the US on H1Bs and overall outsourcing issue and the deliberate maligning of Indian outsourcing companies was responded to with a warning by India that the US will be seriously disadvantaged in its other trade with India should US politicians continue to target Indian IT companies and IT engineers particularly.
This was clear in the Doha talks starting in 2007 and later years in where India chose to bring specifically the H1-B visa issue always , although the Doha talks might not have been the right forum to bring such issues. ( see link below )

I wish that were the case. Unfortunately visa number is allotted only after EVERYTHING else is done and that is why we have to endure additional suffering i.e. even if your case is ready for approval it will remain pending because visa number is unavailable.

Any voluntary job is good in resume. The resume is to show how you are and what skills you have. Volunatary job shows that you are not the one who wants to be idle and also it shows that you have some intention to do service to the society. It is good to have those in resume and also it will help you a lot if you pursue MBA in future.
My wife is also doing voluntary job for more than a year and on side I had to pay for my child care. Still it is good as she gets some contacts, diversion from routine house hold activities and my kid gets to socialize with other kids.

GO ILLEGALLLL is the message for everyone. By the way, dont forget to get your parents / sisters / grand father / etc just few days before this law passes. Throw the passport away and let them claim that they are here for the past few years.

Yes its pretty much difficult for an Indian to arrive here and find a job. Forget about settling, many EB3s have already crossed 5-10 year mark. EB2 at least 5.
I guess he left out the point about locals moving to non-IT related fields in which the salaries are very slowly catching up to IT. These need to grow now with govt, private sector support, now that the glamour of US GC is almost non-existent for new IT graduates and almost pays back like the typical 20 year LIC policy of the 1990s I had. India has always been good in other industries like Textile, steel, cars, etc, and need to get some to world class levels.
I was going to say infrastructure is improving and things would get very good in India in 5-10 years (?) that US IT folks would seriously not find a difference in lifestyle.
But then I saw one of the recent movie hits, and saw the most stuff seemed to be incredulous, unbelievable - good songs though. I change my mind most times when I read some local news or see an occasional movie.
Is there a fundamental change in thinking needed in some areas among a vast majority? something to do with realism, acheiving quality in everything.
Corruption doesn't seem to be the only problem.
Money may not always be the primary reason for people to relocate to India. It will be an oppurtunity to experience the best quality of work, education and learning, the same reason many of us come here.
There has to be more aggressive regular benchmarking of everything with developed countries.
I guess its also a normal part of evolution to a future developed country.
India is India only... never compare it to US, and I do not think there is glamour attached to US green card, People who have the mind set of freedom and education and knowledge with a better quality of life still migrate to USA. There is no doubt about it India's economic grwoth comparing to US is really nothing. And never compare these two countries and never try to change the mind set of a whole generation, for business needs India have a unique culture, with lot of diversity. Still there is lot of poor familes (below the poverty line) in India, education has not reached the rural areas of India yet.
US economy is down and receission is meant to happen every 5 years in US some times to recover and job creation it takes longer if you read the US history and economics you will understand better. This time the open global media made it a big issue, that is about it. When the economy improves and things are better, again your so called glamour comes back. Glamour is in people's mind set, seeing movies and reading somebody else's writing. Still USA is far far better in living and social activities than in India.

Nice story :) I had a clause in my first contract that I had to work for a company at least for 6 months or I will have to reimburse all H1B-related expenses. Well, I left the company and when the company's president called me, just told him to get lost. Never heard from him again. Looking back, I should've sued the company because it did not pay me full salary for the first month while I was on the "bench" (searching for a contract). Well, I am just too lazy :)
